5.1.4

Expanded Classic Surround

Overhead

A 5.1.4 (Overhead/Non-Atmos) system includes five primary speakers: left, center, and right front speakers, along with left and right side surround speakers. Four additional in-ceiling speakers—two positioned toward the front and two toward the rear—are used to deliver dedicated overhead sound. A subwoofer provides low-frequency effects.

This configuration creates an immersive dome of sound with precise spatial cues from above, enhancing effects like rainfall or aircraft flyovers. It’s ideal for purpose-built theater rooms where ceiling-mounted speakers are feasible and preferred for accuracy.

Speaker Definitions

Front | Placed to the left and right of your screen or TV. They handle most of the music, sound effects, and action.

Center | Placed in line with your screen or TV, typically directly below. It is dedicated to voices and dialogue.

Surround | Placed to the sides or behind you. They create the immersive feeling of sound moving around the room.

Rear Surround | Placed directly behind you.  Typically used in larger or more advanced setups for deeper surround effects.

Overhead (Height) | Placed in or near the ceiling. They add a sense o fheight to the sound--like a plane overhead.

Subwoofer | Large, floor or in-wall mounted speaker that produces deep bass, like explosions or rumbling. They are felt as much as heard.

Atmos | Specially designed to project sound both forward and upward. Bouncing sound off the ceiling to allow sound to move in all directions around you.
